Abstract:
Objective To detect the expression of CD73 on peripheral blood CD8+ T cells in HIV-1 infected patients and analyze its correlation with disease progression and T cell abnormal activation. Methods Twenty-seven health controls and 65 HIV-1 infected patients were enrolled in this study. The frequency and absolute count of peripheral blood CD73+CD8+ T cells in all subjects were detected by flow cytometry and its correlation with CD4+ T cell counts, HIV-1 viral load and frequency of CD38+CD8+ T cells were analyzed. Results Compared with healthy controls, the absolute count and frequency of CD73+CD8+ T cells were significantly reduced in peripheral blood of HIV-1 infected patients (P < 0.05); the absolute count and frequency of CD73+CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood of HIV-1 infected patients were positively correlated with CD4+ T cell counts (r=0.555, P=0.001; r=0.342, P=0.005), and negatively correlated with frequency of CD38+CD8+ T cells (r=-0.384, P=0.002; r=-0.387, P=0.001); there was a negative correlation between the absolute count of CD73+CD8+ T cells and the HIV-1 viral load in HIV-1 infected patients (r=-0.261, P=0.035). Conclusions The decrease of CD73+CD8+ T cells in HIV-1 infected patients is not only significantly negatively correlated with T cell activation, but also associated with progression of AIDS.
